People living in poverty and suffering from hunger is something that is hard to think about. But, it is becoming more and more common. Check out this website on World Poverty, World Hunger
Hello my Yuwie friend, I apologise for not being on site for a couple of days and I’m sorry to say that due to the time of year, plus I have a publisher interested in one of my books, and they want me to do some rewrites. I will not be on site as much as I would like to be.
I would like to thank everyone who sent me comments while I was away.
DAWN CHORUS
Dawns Pink Light Is the cue That notifies The conductor, to start up the chorus. Birds, with beaks agape, are in readiness To trill their song To the world. In clear Tones.
From July 16 through July 22, 1994, fragments of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 collided with Jupiter, with dramatic effect. THE CONTEST
Diana said to Nimrod “Would you like to try your skill?” Nimrod took up the challenge Bending his bow with a will. Letting loose the bowstring. He let his arrow fly Streaking across the heavens Like a comet in the sky.
Diana with her bow of crystal Smiled at his mighty deed. Thinking of how she could beat it Cunning was what she would need. From her quiver she drew five arrows, Firing at Jupiter on high All five hit their target, Each one a full bulls eye.
Nimrod turning to Diana, His heart was sad and heavy. “Men will see that shot on Earth.” He said. “And they’ll call it Shoemaker-Levy.”
He was very bedraggled His clothes seen a better day His stride was strong and purposeful As he walked up my pathway. Ringing my front doorbell, He asked “For a crust of bread. I am out of work,” He told me, “And I don’t wish to beg.” I took him to my kitchen For a meal and cup of tea, He told me about himself A little of his life’s history. He thanked me for the meal, I walked him to the gate, Returning to my kitchen I found ten pence beneath the plate.
This event took place on 1966 when I lived in Summerset England. The man was an old soldier and he was moving from town to town looking for work. The ten pence told me all I needed to know about this man who still kept his dignity.
She was twenty-one I was sixty-three I saw her shapely body As she sauntered up to me. Standing there before me She gazed into my eye Her young breast swelling As she heaved a heavy sigh. She said, “If you will show me yours I will show you mine!” I was quite dumfounded And saw she wasn’t clowning So I showed her my book by Keats, She showed me hers...by Elizabeth Browning.
Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixen Comet and Cupid, Doner and Blitzen, Came out of their stall’s one winter night With Santa and sledge they started a flight. They few round the world delivering toys No matter what colour, the girls and the boys. Delivering gifts in the wink of an eye Children asleep don’t see them pass by. Presents delivered, no more shall they roam Happy and content they start off for home. To rest in their stall’s till next Christmas day When Santa and reindeer once more will display, The presents and gifts they give out with joy, To people on earth, the great hoi polloi.
A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to one and all.
Descending through clouds he spinningly fell The wind rushes past him loudly screaming, With joy in his heart he lets out a yell Plummeting downwards no longer dreaming. Akin to an albatross gliding on wing, Beneath a white canopy he swings to and fro, Drifting to earth he’s no longer speeding To be in the air where warm thermals flow.
Like dandelions’ seeds, he’s parachuting Floating on up-draughts above earth below, Ambition at last blossomed this morning To be in the air where warm thermals flow.
Author’s note: Philomel is the old English name for a Nightingale.
While in the forces I failed a medical for the Parachute Regiment due to a slight heart murmur. I wrote this poem many years later.
WHERE WARM THERMALS FLOW
Down in the hollow that’s known as The Dell The Ash and the Oak are blooming in spring. Forest floor painted with nature’s bluebell While high in the branches birds nest and sing. Out of the nest there peeks a small fledgling Not ready for flight though craving to go, With wings open wide in blue skies soaring To be in the air where warm thermals flow.
On terra firma where man has to dwell Stands a young boy, who’s hoping and wishing, To fly on high with a sleek Philomel That’s turning and soaring, dipping and gliding. Facing the sky where soft winds are whispering He gazes in awe with his face all-aglow, Feet rooted in clay eternally longing To be in the air where warm thermals flow.
Had a great time in Belgium, even though the weather was bad. Now I’m home with loads of boxes of Belgium chocolates for Christmas presents.
