Once again, it seems the government has not only mismanaged but also destroyed and continue to destroy our natural resources one after another. Now one of the last treasures our Ocean and everthing she holds, our Natural Renewable Resources. The government has put forward plans for oil exploration off the coast of Cape Breton. They insure no harm will come to the fisheries but as you know they have said that many times before with our other resources and failed every time.
Now they will take an enormous risk with our ocean, gambling with natrural Renewable resorces One oil spill could very well mean the end of all fisheries, the destruction of a very sencetive ecosystem, wildlife and coastlines. We have all seen the destruction oil can have, just ask anyone that had the misfortune of a furnace oil spill. Less than 20 gallons of this oil spilled on your property will run you tens of thousands of dollars to clean up. A spill is only one of many negitive effects.
Its obvious this government cares only about the all mighty buck and not the welfare of the people, natural renewable resources or the environment. All across the globe every day, we are blasted about protecting the environment and the natural resources. We are forced to explore new environmentally sound ways to develop energy.

The First negetive effect involves Seismic testing. These tests consist of a series of high-powered air guns witch send shock waves (explosions) through the water up to 5 km into solid rock on the ocean floor. The guns operate at about 2000psi, sending shots every 10 -15 seconds some times 24 hours a day. These shots register at between 200-250 {dB}. A standard jet engine registers at 160dB; the pain threshold for a human is 130db.
All fish and marine mammals use hearing to locate obstacles, pray and communication. These shock waves were proven to destroy bladders of fish, larvae, and disrupt the migration patterns of marine mammals and fish. Studies also reveled a 50% reduction in catches for Cod, Haddock and Redfish.
This testing dose not show if there is in fact oil or gas it only identifies the geological formation, only drilling can revel if in fact oil or gases are present.
Drilling
When Drilling fluid used to lubricate the drill bit blends with rock, mud, and naturally occurring radioactive materials, it creates a toxic soup, which can spread at the minimum of a thousand meters from the rigs. The drilling muds and cuttings as well as the produced fluids contain arsenic, lead, mercury, cadmium, barite, chrome lingo sulfate, petroleum hydrocarbons, vanadium, copper, aluminum, chromium, zinc, poly nuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, radionuclides, and other heavy metals. All of these chemicals pose a direct threat to the area for as many as forty years.
These threats are harming the organisms that live on the bottom of the ocean, ultimately having negative impacts throughout the region, which include changes in the abundance, richness and diversity of the marine life from both the physical and toxic effects.Oil and grease, ethyl benzene, naphthalene, toluene, and zinc are included in the category of work over fluids, with restrictions only having an effect on the dumping of the oil and grease.
Draining of oil, grease, drilling fluids, lubricants, ethylene, fuels, surfactants, biocides, detergents, corrosion inhibitors, bleach, cleaning solvents, coagulants, as well as other chemicals off the rig deck has a disastrous affect on the surrounding marine environment.For every well drilled about 8,000 square feet can be covered by as much as a meter thick of drilling waste which can remain in the environment for at least two years. Most countrys do not allow rigs within 160 km of ant shore line however along our atlantic coast they may set up as little as 10 km. The beauty of these natural beaches will be lost having a negetive impact on the tourist attraction. A little oil spill,That happens all the time almost one every year,but when was the last time we had a TOXIC realese of chemicals we cant clean up like say, MUSTARD GAS, ARSENIC, NERVE GAS,
The coast of Cape Breton is littered with Canadian, American and British military munitions dumps containing TOXIC chemicals and unexploded mines. Sydney Bite alone has an estimated 7500 tons of arsenic, 3 barges filled with nerve gas and 1600 tons of mustard gas. The Department of National Defense has recognized over 1200 of these dumpsites along the Atlantic coast.
The DND stated to the Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NSOPB) these areas should be avoided,Department of Fisheries informed them of the impact on the fisherie, advice from Scientis, bioligests, Activist and Fishermen all had no merrit. C-NSOPB are the people who regulate oil and gas exploration permits. They have granted licenses for Corridor Resources and Hunt Oil to engage in oil and natural gas exploration in, on and around these dump sites.
Are we willing to gamble with over 20,000 jobs, our renewable recourses our environment, wild life and a way of life, for a fossil fuel that is not only continuing to harm our environment its also only temporary. Leaving behind massive dump sites consisting of concrete chemicals and pipe?
