Kitchen Nightmares Great for Business

Kitchen Nightmares is my favourite Gordon Ramsey show. It's so satisfying to see him go into a struggling business and turn it around.

Gordon Ramsey knows the secret of success. He does what he loves and he learnt to do it well. He concentrates on the

essence

of business, creating value that customers will want to spend their money on. He compliments this with strong business prowess, ensuring that he delivers quality products and service in the most efficient way possible. On top of all this, he is in a niche that affects everyone - food.

The businesses Ramsey helps, especially in the American show, (I'm sorry to say) are mostly clueless. They're so hung up on emotional issues, focussing on the problems with their workplace relationships while expecting customers to swallow bad food and bad service. I can't believe how much crying and tantrum throwing happens in the US show compared to the UK one. It's usually always grown men, too.

Business is about giving the customer what they want and providing it in a way that is better than they could provide it to themselves. Having a business all too often gets caught up in the politics of people, the needs of the staff instead of the needs of the customers. It's a simple change of focus, that when combined with Ramsey's inspiring talks, turns businesses around.

Its simplicity is testified to by the makers of the show. They have a working formula of "Bad restaurant > Crying staff > Shouting Ramsey > Fixed restaurant" that they repeat episode after episode to keep their customers happy. And I for one can't get enough.

How to SEO Your Website

Step 1: Submit

Submit to the main search engines here: http://www.submitexpress.com Make sure you're at least on Google, Bing and Yahoo, the rest will come. Submit to directories such as DMOZ, Technorati, blog directories (Google blog directories), and directories in your niche.

Step 2: Build Links

You need to get your web address on as many other domains as possible. You can do this in many ways:

  • Forum signatures
  • Blog comments
  • Submit to directories
  • Publish your own articles on article publishing sites
  • Stumble/Digg your articles, share them on Facebook, Myspace and Twitter. Give your readers the chance to do it, install Social Bookmarking plugins for your site.
  • Join Google/Yahoo/Facebook groups and post links to your site and articles on their message boards. Make sure it is relevant and be involved in the group, or you may be banned.
  • Look at how other sites do it: Type: "Link: url" into Google, replacing "url" with the address of a popular site in your niche, to see what sites link to them.

Step 3: Build Internal Links

Do what you can to get links to other pages within your site. There are many programs that help to do this. A good tool to start with is an "Other Recommended Pages" add-on for your site. If you're using a standard content management system or blog site, these should be plentiful.

Step 4: Optimize

Optimize your meta tags. Check you page's meta tags here: http://www.seocentro.com/tools/search-engines/metatag-analyzer.html You need to do this for every article you publish. You should have everything at 100% for every page. It's actually not that difficult.

  • Use a paragraph from the text for the descr i ption.
  • Only use keywords that appear a few times in the text.
  • Use <h1>, <h2> etc for titles within your articles.
  • Put keywords in your alt tags for images and objects.
  • Learn what works by playing with the meta tag checker until you get a page to be 100%!

Make sure all your URLs are search engine friendly. There is a good article on how to do this here: http://www.tamingthebeast.net/articles3/spiders-301-redirect.htm You may need a plugin or some other code, depending on your content management system. For Wordpress use All in One SEO.

Step 5: Check

Step 6: Repeat

SEO is an ongoing process. You won't get there overnight, it takes a long time and a lot of dedication!

A Look at Geothermal
We've all heard about geothermal having the potential to trump all other forms of renewable energy. So I wanted to take a more in depth look at it.

Introduction to Geothermal

No article like this would be complete without the obligatory cheesy video!

Geothermal energy is tapped from the ground. When underground water comes in contact with the heat of the Earth's magma, it can get to temperatures of up to 370ºC. Holes can be drilled into the ground and this water or steam comes to the surface, either by its own steam bubbles, or it can be pumped. This steam can then be used to power turbines in the same way as conventional fossil fuel burning power plants.

Today only 10GW is utilised from geothermal for electricity, around 28GW is used directly for heating. Because of the ease of distribution of water, it is far more efficient to use geothermal just for heat than for generating electricity.

With regards to generating electricity, the thermal efficiency of geothermal electricity plants is low due to the lower temperature of the liquids compared to steam. This does not affect operational costs like in a coal burning plant, but it does factor into the viability of the plant. A geothermal plant needs to produce more heat than its pumps consume. In order to do this, plants use one of 3 different types of specialised heat cycles. The most recent development, binary cycle, allows for lower temperature water to be used, so can be far more efficient.

Advantages of Geothermal

  • Of course, there are no fossil fuels burnt.
  • No reliance on sun or wind.
  • Geothermal plants take up little land.
  • Lower maintenance costs than conventional systems
  • Geothermal systems are flexible; they can be easily expanded or subdivided.

Disadvantages of Geothermal

  • Only suitable in areas with tectonic plate activity, or where there have been volcanoes, although this is improving with technology.
  • Large costs for land surveys required to find suitable sites.
  • Large costs for initial infrastructure.
  • A large percentage of the electricity created must go back into running its own pumps if the system is to be green.
  • In some cases, a site that has happily been extracting steam and turning it into power for many years, may suddenly stop producing steam.
  • When this happens, harmful gases may escape from the holes drilled. These must be captured by the site developers.
  • Closed loop systems use antifreeze which can produce CFCs.

Ground Source Heat

The ground is sometimes hot not from the heat of the Earth below but from solar energy held by the ground. This heat can be harnessed with heat pumps almost anywhere to heat and cool buildings. Of course these heat pumps would need to run on renewable energy. Ground source heat systems can easily be installed for individual houses. There are many companies that will install a heat pump for you.

Other Uses for Geothermal

  • It can also be used for desalination of salt water (requiring less maintenance than reverse osmosis techniques).
  • Speeding up crop growth.
  • Speeding up the growth of prawns, alligators and more for fish farms (currently utilised in the US).
  • Allows growing of flowers in the summer.

Conclusion

So while geothermal may not be the holy grail it's made out to be, there are many areas where it can be improved if effort is put into it. Although it is currently limited to where it can be used, it is still possible today to supply 100% of the electrical needs of 39 countries in Africa, South America and the Pacific. This can only improve with technology. Binary cycle systems already have huge potential.

In addition, Ground source heat pumps have the potential to reduce the energy usage of individual houses, and geothermal's ability to improve crop growth and perform desalination could be extremely vital for providing a sustainable society.

Get Motivated to Exercise

When it comes to exercise, it’s amazing the things we will do to procrastinate, or the excuses we will come up with. Getting motivated to exercise can be tough, but there are a number of things you can do if you’re serious about increasing your motivation.

Get Motivated to Exercise

Motivate Yourself with Sport

The best thing you can do to get motivated to exercise is start playing a sport. Find something that you like. You don’t necessarily have to be good at your chosen sport either. The important thing is that it’s something you enjoy.

Competitive sport is one of the best forms of exercise because it’s not only fun, but it forces you exercise without even thinking about it. The emphasis is on fun, not on fitness. The fitness is a by-product. In contrast, going on the treadmill at the gym can be pretty boring. It’s like a chore.

Playing sports competitively helps you perfect tactics and skill. This is also very motivating.

Do your chosen sport or exercise a couple of times a week with different people. Perhaps do different sports. This way, the other people will motivate you to come, and if you miss a session, you haven’t got a whole week to wait before the next exercise session, which would severely reduce your chances of keeping the momentum going.

Join a Community

If sports aren’t for you, perhaps consider martial arts, yoga, pilates, aerobics, or something else where you can join a community. A running, swimming, or cycling club could also be appealing, or maybe they’re not different enough? What about climbing, canoeing, or surfing? Use your imagination and bring some excitement to your exercise!

Joining a community will give you accountability, hopefully your friends will push you to exercise. It’s also great fun. It’s a chance to socialize and meet new people while improving your fitness. In addition, you will be pushed by your instructor further than you would push yourself. This will produce results – and motivate you further.

What About Going to the Gym?

If you want the benefits of interacting with other people or in exercising with sophisticated equipment, then by all means, taking the time to go work out at a gym can be a good motivator. The thought of a hot spa after exercise can also be fantastic motivation.

However, the gym can also be very boring. Even paying a yearly fee is often not enough motivation, this is why many gyms demand it. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that the gym is the only way to stay fit. There are countless ways to get exercise.

Eliminate Excuses

  • The dishes will still be there when you come back.
  • If you injure yourself, do something different while you heal.
  • Buy some good shoes.
  • Forget about results. They may take time to become visible.
  • Plan your eating around your exercise, make sure you have enough energy.
  • It’s never too cold to exercise.
  • If it seems too hot, it means your muscles will be less prone to injury. Drink lots of water.
  • Never mind the rain, you’re going to sweat anyway.
  • Embarrassed? Do you think top footballers feel embarrassed?
  • Feelings of tiredness will disappear about 30 seconds into your exercise, guaranteed.

Slow and Steady

When you first make the effort to start a healthy lifestyle, whether it be eating or exercise or both, you may be all fired up. Be careful not to burn out. It should not be all or nothing. The important thing is that you do at least some exercise a few times a week. It’s far better to do 5 minutes a day than 3 hours once and then give up.

When it comes to exercise, something is always better than nothing.

If All Else Fails – Walk

A brisk walk, even a few times a week, can get you into the exercise mindset. Get off your train or bus early. Or go for a walk an hour after dinner. You’ll notice the benefits even if you just do 20 minutes walking every couple of days. Get that heart pumping, and the endorphins will make you wonder why you never started earlier. Remember that feeling to motivate yourself to exercise the next day, or to begin a proper exercise routine.

Make walking a way of life – it’s good for the environment too!

Your Own Exercise Schedule

If you can motivate yourself to exercise at home, you can save time and money by not going to a gym.

You may consider writing down a tentative workout schedule of particular exercises. Working out specific muscle groups on particular days will give other muscles time to rest and repair themselves into more toned and stronger tissues.

At least stretch in the morning and maybe do some light cardiovascular exercise.

In the evening, spend at least 20 minutes on cardiovascular exercise. This could be a run, aerobics, swimming, or using some equipment such as a rowing machine. After that, do some weight lifting. Warm down with leg kicks and punches. Close the session with stretching.

Motivate Yourself With the Benefits of Exercise

In the long run, moderate exercise can help to increase your life span. You’ll feel a stronger sense of personal power and increase confidence. Being fit, healthy, toned, and strong will also increase your survival rate in dangerous or life-threatening situations. A toned and lean body feels healthier than an out-of-shape body. You’ll be more attractive to potential partners.

Immediate benefits of exercise include feeling well physically and mentally. Regular exercise will give your more energy, better sleep, and a better immune system. You’ll have more stamina which will allow you to entertain more activities in your life.

If you are depressed, exercise can help clear your mind and allow you to reassess sources of stress.

Motivated Yet?

Exercise on a regular basis has many benefits. Performing in a sport adds excitement and motivation.

Even moderate exercise can help to increase your life span. Immediate benefits include feeling well physically and mentally. A toned and lean body feels healthier than an out-of-shape body. You’ll have more energy and stamina and the desire to do more activities in your life.

Exercise increases your personal power and confidence.

A healthy, toned, and strong body increases your survival rate.

Create an exercise schedule to help motivate you to keep on working out. Have at least a couple of appointments with others.

Surround yourself with people who will motivate you to exercise.

Do at least some exercise, even if it’s just walking. Build it up slowly.
